Anxiety Treatment Options at Actify

Actify’s treatment teams are able to create tailored care plans for each patient’s needs. We firmly believe that behavioral health treatment is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution and that not every treatment option is right for every patient. Your first appointment at Actify will include an in-depth consult with a mental health care provider to set up a treatment plan. When it comes to treating anxiety disorders, we take into account patient history, previous treatment trials, and the way symptoms present in each case. Most of our treatment options are covered by insurance, too.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Ketamine infusion therapy is a treatment option for some anxiety disorders. Eligible patients who choose this treatment option are connected to an IV and administered a very low dose of ketamine for about 40 minutes. Potential side effects may occur during the infusion including nausea, elevation of blood pressure, dissociation, or headache. Ketamine infusion therapy is a safe, evidence-based, rapid-acting option to help manage anxiety symptoms. Ketamine infusion therapy is most effective for anxiety when done in tandem with cognitive behavioral therapy.

Spravato (Esketemine Nasal Spray)

Spravato (nasal esketamine) is a FDA-approved treatment for depression in patients who have not responded to 2 or more treatments. Some patients experience anxiety and depression as comorbid conditions, and addressing one disorder oftentimes reduces the severity of the other. Esketamine, also called s-ketamine, is “one half” of ketamine — the other half being r-ketamine, its mirror image molecule. Spravato is a nasal spray, administered in an Actify office setting, that may more rapidly treat symptoms than SSRI medications. Side effects may be experienced for about an hour while taking it; side effects may include a dreamlike or “floaty” feeling, nausea, headache, or brief and mild elevations in blood pressure.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is another FDA-approved treatment for depression that is a non-invasive, in-office, well-tolerated procedure. TMS uses an MRI-strength magnetic coil to deliver a low-energy pulse to a targeted area of the brain. This is a non-invasive procedure that does not involve medication. Treatment is delivered on a Monday through Friday basis for 4-6 weeks for about 30 minutes, and then tapered off. Results are typically seen within the first 2-3 weeks. TMS is directly insurance-covered by most plans for treatment resistant depression, but may also be delivered off-label for anxiety disorders.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a skill-based talk therapy focused on the relationship between a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Individuals with anxiety often have pervasive, unrealistic, negative thoughts that adversely shape the way they view themselves, their environment and their prospects for the future. These persistent thoughts can interfere with relationships or level of functioning. CBT aims to provide a set of tools that allow the patient to manage negative thoughts by doing things like questioning the validity of these thoughts, altering one’s negative core beliefs, and ultimately changing one’s behaviors and feelings.

Common Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety can manifest in many different ways depending on a variety of factors. It is not uncommon for patients with anxiety to struggle with other mental illnesses. The most common comorbidity we see are patients who experience depression and anxiety concurrently, which can make both conditions more difficult to treat. About half of the people with anxiety will experience comorbid depression.

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Nervousness
  • Racing thoughts
  • Feelings of panic or dread
  • Insomnia
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (over/under eating, constipation, diarrhea, etc.)
  • Increased sweating
  • Rapid breathing and/or heart rate
  • Panic attacks

How to Know When to Seek Help

Most people feel anxious from time to time – it’s normal, but when symptoms persist for more than two weeks and start to impact your ability to maintain your relationships and responsibilities it’s time to reach out. It doesn’t matter if this is your first time having these symptoms or if you’ve experienced anxiety in the past – there is help available. Many people find that treatment creates space for hope and that life is ultimately more enjoyable when symptoms are easier to manage. Anxiety is treatable, but when left untreated symptoms can worsen.
