Ketamine Treats Many Mental Health Conditions

Ketamine has been shown in studies to treat several anxiety disorders, including:

Early evidence also suggests that ketamine may have a protective effect against exposure to trauma.
Depression is a common, but serious, mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel and think, as well as manage daily activities such as sleeping, eating, or working. Depression is a treatable condition, and for the first time in 50 years, depression treatments are available that do not require taking daily medications that can cause side effects.

How Ketamine Treatment Works

Ketamine treatment works entirely differently than treatments for depression that you’ve probably heard of in the past. For example, drugs such as oral SSRI antidepressants are believed to help balance out the brain by increasing serotonin levels. Ketamine, on the other hand, repairs damage to the brain that has resulted from long-term stress hormones, working on the brain’s NMDA receptors.

When the body experiences stress, it responds by releasing cortisol and other hormones into the brain that damage its pathways. Ketamine works to repair this and has been shown to have much more rapid effects on repairing brain plasticity.

Actify understands that trying a new method to treating depression is something that can be daunting, especially with a novel treatment option such as ketamine. We offer two options for administering this drug, being either intranasally (Spravato), or through intravenous infusion.

During a ketamine infusion, patients are connected to an IV and a low dose of ketamine is administered for about 45 minutes. Ketamine is one of the older, safer medications that doctors use; is so safe as an anesthetic that much higher doses are frequently used in emergency procedures for children. Such doses are often times 4-10 times higher than what we administer at Actify.

Ketamine Side Effects

Ketamine infusion therapy, while being entirely safe, can cause some minor side effects. As a result we aim to ensure our patients are given the utmost care while they are being treated in our facilities. Some of the side effects one may experience when trying a Ketamine treatment are:

  • Dissociation (sometimes called an out-of-body experience)
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Perceptual disturbances (blurry vision, time seeming like it’s speeding up or slowing down)

Ketamine Infusion Therapy Insurance Coverage

Ketamine infusion therapy is not an FDA-approved treatment for depression and anxiety disorders. However, at Actify we do everything we can to ensure that a portion of your treatment can be covered or reimbursed by your insurance provider. If this is a concern you have, a Patient Services Specialist can provide detailed information about paying for treatment.
