TMS Treats Several Behavioral Health Conditions

TMS may aid in the treatment of anxiety, though is not FDA-approved for this indication. When used for anxiety, the coil is placed in a different location to deliver a protocol that more specifically targets brain regions associated with anxiety.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-approved treatment for depression that has not responded to 1 previous treatment. TMS works by non-invasively stimulating areas of the brain that may be underactive, leading to symptoms of depression.
Some forms of TMS have now been approved to treat OCD. This is a different protocol than TMS for depression, targeting areas of the brain that are believed to be involved in obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviors.
TMS is beneficial for patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as many regions of the brain can be impacted by this condition. These regions include the amygdala, believed to modulate the fear response, the hippocampus, which is responsible for storing memories, and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), a region that processes emotions. Patients with PTSD tend to have an overactive amygdala and reduced activity in their vmPFC, as well as reduced volume of the hippocampus, causing them to find it difficult to differentiate between past trauma and current situations. TMS may help by stimulating the cells in the vmPFC, restoring balance in the patient’s brain to ease symptoms of PTSD.

How Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Works

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is FDA-approved for depression and the treatment is quick and non-invasive. During a treatment, the patient is seated comfortably and provided earplugs. The technician will then place the magnetic coil on your head, near the forehead, where it is believed to stimulate mood regulation. A typical course involves daily sessions, 5 days per week, for around 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, the frequency is typically tapered off. Each session generally lasts 20 to 40 minutes and during this time short electromagnetic currents are administered by a trained Actify TMS technician.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Side Effects

While Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is FDA-approved and generally safe, patients may experience a few minor side effects during treatment. These side effects are entirely normal and patients are closely monitored during their treatment by our clinicians to ensure safety. These side effects may include:

  • Headaches
  • Painful scalp sensations
  • Facial twitching

For some with specific medical conditions, there may be more severe risks. A full consultation will be conducted prior to treatment to determine if TMS may be a safe and effective option for you.

TMS Insurance Coverage

Most insurance companies do cover Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, however coverage details will vary by individual plan. Actify is actively enrolling with insurers for direct coverage, so patients who qualify can access the care they need. If you or someone you know is struggling with major depression and have yet to find relief from medication treatment, TMS may be the right treatment option for you.
